Description
Introduce or summarize the Age of U.S. imperialism with this stations set. Students explore the meaning of imperialism, arguments for and against imperialism, and the effects of imperialism. This stations activity includes primary sources and political cartoons to get students thinking critically about U.S. imperialism.
Activity includes 14 stations on imperialism. Topics include:
- U.S. Imperialist arguments
- Anti-Imperialist arguments and the Anti-Imperialist League
- Brief look into U.S. imperialism in Cuba, the Philippines, and China
- Effects of imperialism on culture and economies
- Kipling and the "White Man's Burden"; the racism of imperialism
- U.S. Open Door Policy in China

- 14 stations
- Student handout with 1-3 questions for each station
The stations include:
- primary source excerpts or quotations
- and/or pictures/cartoons about imperialism
Each station includes reflection questions which students could either respond to on the student handout, a sticky note, their own paper, or in an interactive notebook.
I use this activity with U.S. history students in 10th and 11th grade before we take a deep dive into the Spanish-American War and the age of U.S. imperialism.
